Sustainable products and packaging

As an important contribution to the preservation of our livelihoods, we place a special focus on the sustainability of packaging and products.

Mission for sustainable, "eco-friendly" products

Some time ago, we started to systematically convert our product ranges to sustainable products. In a continuous improvement process, we review and evaluate important sustainability criteria, starting with the selection of raw materials, the product development process, transport and the use phase, right through to the recycling-friendly disposal of the products.
In doing so, we strive to reduce the ecological footprint of our product range step by step and, where possible, to sustainably reduce negative environmental impacts and unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions associated with that product.

We critically analyse all products using a comprehensive catalogue of sustainability criteria. We already apply strict standards and are constantly expanding our expertise in the field together with our production partners.

We focus on the following objectives:

Systematic switch to more sustainable packaging solutions

More sustainable packaging solutions are made possible by, among other things, switching to plastic-free packaging, prioritising recycled raw materials and using cardboard packaging from sustainable, certified forestry.

Since packaging only has a very short useful life and therefore a particularly poor environmental balance, we make sure that the materials we use are very recyclable. This means that our packaging can be easily recycled after use and is available again as a raw material for new packaging material.

Finally, we carefully analyse the transport routes of the raw materials used and avoid the longest possible transport routes in order to reduce CO₂ emissions further.

Systematic switch to more sustainable products

We also use recycled secondary raw materials for our products if they meet our high product safety requirements and our special quality standards. We pay attention to the efficient use of materials and develop high-quality and durable products to ensure a very long service life.

In order to accurately assess the impact on the climate and the environment, we plan to measure greenhouse gases consistently at product level and reduce them in a later step.

Short transport routes and the switch to more climate-friendly means of transport are also very important here.

Our sustainability logos

Plastikfrei – reine Kartonagenverpackung

Plastic-free – pure cardboard packaging

The packaging is made of more sustainable paper, cardboard or carton. Plastics are not used for the packaging.

Verpackung aus nachweislich recycelten Quellen

Packaging from demonstrably recycled sources

The packaging is made from at least 50 % recycled raw materials and is supported by appropriate certificates and evidence. Secondary raw materials from material recycling are used, e.g. from the collection of used plastic packaging via via local waste collecting systems or from the collection of waste paper and cardboard.

Recycelte Produktmaterialien

Recycled product materials

At least 20 % resource- and climate-friendly recycled product materials are used for production. The materials also come from secondary raw materials, which are obtained, for example, from the recycling of plastic, metal or glass waste.

Eco-Friendly

Eco-Friendly

Ultimately, it's the sum total that counts! Our special Eco-Friendly label is only awarded to Hama products that reliably meet a wide range of different sustainability criteria. Within Hama, our sustainability catalogue comprises eleven categories and a total of 30 very different individual criteria. In addition to environmental aspects, special human rights social criteria are also taken into account, which our production partners must fulfil.

Sustainable packaging at the Monheim site

  • Systematic conversion to cardboard packaging (47% reduction in blister packaging since 2017)
  • Cardboard and paper from non-recycled sources originate from sustainable forestry with FSC certifi-cation
  • Remaining plastic packaging has been PVC-freesince 2021
  • 52% reduction of magnets in packaging since 2018
  • Recyclable, easily separable design, where possible made from monomaterials
